At just 11 years old, Bryce has already accomplished something extraordinary- earning a black belt in karate. For most kids, this achievement is impressive. But for Bryce, who has Autism, it represents so much more than martial arts mastery. It’s a story of personal growth, independence, and transformation. Bryce’s karate journey began when he was 4 years old. His mother, Melissa, recognized the potential benefits of karate for Bryce and wanted to give him the chance to participate. However, with limited financial resources, enrolling Bryce in regular classes would have been impossible. Fortunately, she applied for and received a grant making karate lessons a reality. Melissa recalls positive reports in Bryce’s early years of karate. All of Bryce’s service providers commented on how much he had improved overall since starting karate. His teacher noticed progress in his peer relationships, eye contact, confidence and self-regulation. After years of hard work, determination and support from those around him, Bryce achieved the rank of black belt. For Bryce and his family, it’s an incredible milestone that might not have been reached without the support of our grants.
Letter from Bryce’s Karate Instructor
To Whom It May Concern,
Since joining Hudson Valley Karate in October of 2017, Bryce has shown remarkable improvement in several key areas of his development. His social skills have blossomed as he interacts with peers and instructors, learning the value of teamwork, communication, and mutual respect. Through structured group activities and partner drills, he has gained confidence and awareness of social settings. Additionally, our program’s emphasis on routine and discipline has significantly enhanced his ability to focus, allowing him to better concentrate on tasks and follow instructions with greater ease.
In terms of physical development, Bryce has made substantial strides in coordination and balance. Consistent training has helped Bryce improve his motor skills and spatial awareness. He has demonstrated increased agility and control, which are evident in his improved ability to perform difficult movements and maintain balance. Overall, our martial arts program and character development program has provided a supportive environment that fosters growth in both social and physical domains. This has resulted in Bryce becoming a more well-rounded and confident individual.
Ms. Melissa Curfman has also been crucial in helping Bryce reach the heights that he has. She is diligent in making sure Bryce comes to class, has his proper equipment, and understands what his goals are. We have developed a great partnership in working towards Bryce’s success.
